A Canadian newspaper ran an editorial noting that Mormon beliefs about agency were valuable in understanding the importance of freedom in government. While the actual article was too partisan for the scope of this website, the basic premise—that freedom is a God-given gift—is an essential topic in evaluating the intersection of faith and government.
Mormons believe God gave us our agency before we were born and that it plays an important role in the purpose of life. That purpose can be tied into why Mormons—and the Book of Mormon—teach that the United States played a divine role in God’s plan.
Let’s start at the beginning, which was before the beginning, actually. Mormons (a nickname for members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints) teach that we lived with God before we were born. He created our spirits and we lived with Him in a pre-mortal existence as spirits while we learned the gospel, built a relationship with God, and decided what sort of person we wanted to be, including whether or not God’s plan mattered to us. The late Terrie Lynn Bittner—beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and friend—was the author of two homeschooling books and numerous articles, including several that appeared in Latter-day Saint magazines. She became a member of the Church at the age of 17 and began sharing her faith online in 1992.

Members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (sometimes called the “Mormon Church” by friends of other faiths) are often referred to as “Mormons.” I am a Mormon. And I am a regular, every day young adult.
What is an average day like in the life of a Mormon?
The average day for a Mormon is just like their respected peers. In America, where I live, the average day consists of going to work, spending time with family, finding someway to serve a friend or loved one, doing regular household chores, etc. For instance, today I have: read my scriptures, exercised, eaten food, done some laundry, eaten more food (including some really yummy frozen grapes!). Later I will be going shopping, and then tonight I will spend time with my wonderful family! A pretty ordinary day, but wonderful nonetheless. (more…)

usic is an important and powerful part of life. It can be an influence for good that helps you draw closer to Heavenly Father (See Doctrine and Covenants 25:12). However, it can also be used for wicked purposes. Unworthy music may seem harmless, but it can have evil effects on your mind and spirit.
Choose carefully the music you listen to. Pay attention to how you feel when you are listening. Don’t listen to music that drives away the Spirit, encourages immorality, glorifies violence, uses foul or offensive language, or promotes Satanism or other evil practices.

How you speak says much about who you are. Clean and intelligent language is evidence of a bright and wholesome mind. Use language that uplifts, encourages, and compliments others. Do not insult others or put them down, even in joking. Speak kindly and positively about others so you can fulfill the Lord’s commandment to love one another. When you use good language, you invite the Spirit to be with you.
Always use the names of God and Jesus Christ with reverence and respect. Misusing their names is a sin. Profane, vulgar, or crude language or gestures, as well as jokes about immoral actions, are offensive to the Lord and to others. Foul language harms your spirit and degrades you. Do not let others influence you to use it.

LOS ANGELES – The Los Angeles Dodgers will conduct Mormon Night tonight with more than 4,100 members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints attending the game against the Washington Nationals at Dodger Stadium.
